Essay

When making a Corporate or Promotional film, the codes and conventions are very important factors. To look into the codes and conventions I am analysing a corporate and promotional film.

Codes & Conventions

'Breast Cancer Campaign Advertisement'

The style of the film could be fly-on-the-wall. Fly-on-the-wall is when the camera tries to be as unobtrusive as possible, yet still get the shots it needs. It gives the viewer the feeling of being in the room, like a fly on a wall.

The content in the film is trying to convey the point of helping them every step of the way in the fundraising event. They creatively show this support through many simple things, starting off with helping the man into his slippers. Out of context, that would appear strange but it was their imaginative way of showing any and all types of support. It also shows them changing the empty shower bottle and pulling his seat out at work, this is showing the viewer that they will support you in even the simplest of tasks. It then goes on informing us of the tasks they actually offer support in and how they help so the viewer would know that they would be well looked after if they help in raising money for their cause. The film then finishes with giving the website so that the film is short and sweet but still allows for the viewer to get the information they need without them getting bored.

The format of this film is corporate and informational. It is a corporate film because it is used to inform people of what to expect if they help the campaign. It is informational because it is used to help the viewer understand that it is a two way street when helping, you help raise the money and they help you in doing so. It also informs the viewer of all the main important details that revolve around their message of support.

The representation of the social group in this film is important. The film is gender based on females, as it shows that the fundraising group is a female run campaign that is for females with breast cancer. However, they used a male runner to show the audience that anyone, not just women, can help raise the money and show their support to helping beat breast cancer. The target audience is women with breast cancer, the age group being roughly between 16-60+ years old. These are the target audiences because the campaigners are showing the women with breast cancer that there are groups that are trying to get support from other people to help in beating cancer. There isn't really a social class specific since breast cancer can happen to any women in any social class, so the target social class would be all classes, A-E.

The message of the film is pretty simple, 'Run for breast cancer campaign and we will support you every step of the way'. It is pretty self-explanatory, they support you whilst you are supporting the campaign. It is telling the viewer that they are very cooperative when you sign up to help, that you won't be doing it alone and that they will help whenever and however it is needed.

'VoicePlay Promotional Video'

The style of this film is a slow speed film. The camera barely moves and when it does it moves slowly to make sure nothing is missed. However, the content is interesting making it seem fast paced.

The content in the film is trying to get you to want to see them live or even buy their music. The film is of them showing off all the different types of acapella that they can do to show their range. It starts with them setting the beat to the song before they sing to show the audience that they are indeed making the sounds themselves. They then show that they are capable of making you laugh and enjoy yourselves during their shows by making a car scene where the three guys in the back are actually the car radio. Throughout the video they use songs from throughout the ages to show that they do music for all ages. They have a part of the video where they manage to sound like electric guitars, they do this to show the audience their impressive range of skills. To finish it off they show that they can make music out of anything, even water bottles.

The format of the film is promotional. It is promotional because it is a film to raise awareness of the acapella group 'VoicePlay'. The point of the film is to get you aware of 'VoicePlay' so that you would want to buy their music and see their shows/concerts.

The representation of the social group in a promotional film is also important. The film is gender based on females, as it is about a boy-band and boy-bands direct their audience to females. The target audience females that enjoy boy bands and acapella, the age group being 13-25. This age group because teenager girls are the audience that would spend a lot of money to see a boy band they like and the older end of they age group would probably buy it because it is acapella. The target social class would be A-C2 because they would be the classes that could afford to buy the music either for themselves or for their children.

There isn't really a message to this film. It is basically just trying to get you to buy their music, go to their concerts and raise awareness. They don't have a hidden message in the film.

Current Practices

There are three more important factors to be aware of other than codes & conventions and they are, Current Practices, Legal issues and Ethical issues. I will start with discussing the current practices of corporate films.
The equipment we will be using for our corporate film are specifically chosen to make sure we achieve the highest quality possible. The equipment we will be using is an SLR Cameras, Tripod, H2 Recorders, Batteries, SD Cards, Final Cut Express and the lighting we will use will be Natural Lighting. We are using the SLR Cameras instead of handheld camera because they SLR's are in HD and make the shot more clearer than the other cameras. We will be using Tripods to keep our cameras steady and to reduce shaking of the footage. The H2 Recorders are to help us get clearer sound since the cameras might be far away from the person and the sound could be muffled. Batteries and SD Cards are required to keep the camera working and to have somewhere for our footage to record. Final Cut Express is the software we will be using to edit our footage for our corporate films. To make sure that our corporate film will be able to be watched online or made onto a DVD, the format of our corporate film will be a QuickTime File in HD. The techniques we will be using in our corporate films are Sequences, Match Cuts and Jump Cuts. Sequences is when you put a bunch of videos into a certain order and in a certain way to make a narrative. Match Cuts are when you have clips of two different objects, spaces or compositions and link them together to continue on a narrative in a metaphorical way. Jump Cuts are when two or more shots are taken of the same subject but the subject has moved slightly, this gives the effect of jumping forward in time.

Legal Issues

When it comes to Legal issues, we have to take into consideration four things; Privacy, Libel, Copyright and the Current Law relating to Race and Disability. To protect the privacy of all those involved in the corporate film, we will be using Actor Release Forms to prove that we have the permission and full consent for the people involved to be in our film and it can be shown anywhere. Proceeding without doing this would mean we would face legal action. Libel is something to be careful with. Libel is publishing a false statement that can harm or damage a person's reputation and image. Copyright ensures protection for any intellectual product, meaning if we were to use someone else's music for our video without paying for it then we can, and will, be sued and our video will be taken down. Thus we must pay them, ask for permission to use their product or credit them. Crediting them can still potentially have it taken down but at least then you are not claiming it as your own. The Current Law relating to Disability is a part of the Equality Act of 2010. This law was passed to protect people from discrimination in their workplace and in the whole society. This is very important for us to understand and keep in our minds since our corporate film is about Hawthorns Academy which deals with Moderate Learning Difficulties. The Current Law relating to Race is part of the Race Relations Act of 1976. This law was passed to punish those who discriminate against a race or interracial relationships and to ensure that people of all races are treated with respect and equality. This is something for us to keep in mind because it is important on a wide-scale not just in a corporate film.

Ethical Issues

Ethical Issues revolve around race, gender and religion. To avoid any issues we must make sure to keep a professional attitude and must not discriminate against race, gender or religion. If discrimination was to happen, it would cause an uproar with the public and would be breaking the Equality Law. Doing so would be punished severely. We will avoid this by being subjective and keeping an open mind to other races, genders and religions.
